Hey everyone, I'm kicking off this thread to help out some noobs who are trying to get their Garry's Mod server up and running without breaking the bank. For $10, I was able to set up a smooth-running server using a budget VPS and some basic Linux skills. Who else has a good guide to share or some tips for minimizing lag on a shoestring budget?

"Liked this thread, OP. Just set up a GMod server last week using this method and it was pretty smooth sailing. Only thing I'd suggest is using a good-quality VPS if you plan on hosting a lot of players."

"Lol, nice one @Gammer23! Just a heads up, make sure you're using a decent VPS and not a shared hosting plan, or you'll be dealing with lag anyway. Also, have you considered using a cloud-based server for extra stability?"

"Hey guys, just a heads up, I've been running a GMOD server on a VPS for a while now and I think the most important thing for lag-free performance is a decent CPU. Don't go for the cheapest option, trust me on that one. Has anyone tried out the Steam Dedicated Server tool for ease of setup?"

Just wanted to chime in, I've had success with digitalocean, their $5/mo server offers more than enough power for a small Gmod server. Plus it's super easy to set up and upgrade as needed. Anyone else have any experience with DO?

"Love this guide, OP! I just set up a GMod server using these steps and it's been lag-free for weeks now. The $10 price tag is also super sweet, thanks for sharing!"
