"Hey all, just set up a server for some side projects and wanted to make sure I'm securing it properly. What are some essential steps to prevent script kiddies from getting in? I've heard firewall rules and regular updates are must-haves, but what else should I be doing?"

Just a heads up, but make sure your server's up-to-date with the latest kernel and software patches. Also, setting up a UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall) rule to block incoming traffic from untrusted sources is a no-brainer.

"Definitely keep those kernel and package updates coming, fellas. I also recommend setting up fail2ban and ufw for some instant firewall love. Don't forget to change default root passwords!"

"Agree with OP, firewalls and strong passwords are a must. I also make sure to keep my Linux distro and packages up to date, especially if I'm running a public-facing server. Has anyone used Fail2Ban for blocking IP addresses with excessive login attempts?"

"Lol, don't even get me started on script kiddies. Keeping your Linux server up to date with the latest patches is like a no-brainer - use a reputable source like Apt or Yum and automate those updates, bro."
