Hey guys, I'm new to DB admin but have been experimenting with scaling my project's database on a budget. I've seen some tutorials on using managed services like Aurora or Google Cloud SQL, but I'm not sold on the idea of shelling out $$$ per instance. Is it even possible to scale on the cheap without sacrificing performance?

"Been doing some research on sharding and it seems like that's a viable option for scaling without breaking the bank. Has anyone experimented with it? Any success stories or horror stories to share?"

"Yea, scaling your DB without breaking the bank is a constant struggle. I've been experimenting with TimescaleDB, it's open-source and has some insane performance boosts for time-series data. Worth a shot if you're on a budget, imo."

"Hey, I think you guys are on the right track with this discussion. We should dive deeper into some of the newer, more affordable DB services like OpenSearch or even something like Timescale for PostgreSQL - they're offering some pretty sweet pricing plans that could help scale without breaking the bank. Anyone have any experience with these?"
